Biography

Shankland joined Ayr United following his departure from Aberdeen, initially on a short-term deal and made an immediate impact scoring on his debut against Raith Rovers to put Ayr in front, although Raith went on to win 2-1. Shankland was prolific in his first season at Somerset Park, scoring a total of 29 goals in 33 games in all competitions and was recognised by his peers as he won the League 1 PFA Scotland Players' Player of the Year. Ayr ended up winning League 1 by one point on the last day thanks to Alloa Athletic holding Raith Rovers to a draw at Starks Park on the final day and Ayr winning at home to Albion Rovers. Shankland missed Ayr's two final league games through suspension after being dismissed in the penultimate home game with Stranraer, which Ayr lost 2-1.

Shankland 3
Following his successful season at Somerset Park, Shankland signed a new one year deal at Ayr, despite interest from elsewhere and the club rejecting numerous offers and hit the ground running in his first game of the season scoring a hat-trick against his former club, Greenock Morton in the League Cup and another one a week later against Stenhousemuir in the same competition. The following week, Shankland scored a screamer against Partick Thistle that later went on to win the clubs goal of the season competition at the end of the season and saw Ayr get out of the group stage once again. He was prolific once again, scoring a total of 24 league goals and finishing the top scorer in the Championship (winning 'The Tartan Boot') as well as the top scorer in the League Cup with and scoring four goals in one game in a 5-0 drubbing of Dundee United at Tannadice Park in the League, a game in which the home side were heavily favoured before the match.
