Ayr United held on for a deserved point at East End Park after Luke McBeth’s first-half equaliser cancelled out an early strike from Dunfermline’s Andy Tod.

The opening exchanges belonged to the visitors, who took the lead after 14 minutes. Tod finished the move clinically to give Dunfermline an advantage they would hold for much of the first half.

Ayr, however, responded before the interval. McBeth restored parity in first-half stoppage time, ensuring that the sides went into the break level at 1–1.

Dunfermline enjoyed the greater share of possession after the interval and finished with 64 per cent of the ball, but Ayr’s defensive organisation prevented the home side from turning that control into a winning goal. The hosts registered nine attempts, five of them on target, while Ayr managed five shots and two efforts on target.

Harry Stone was called upon to make four saves for Ayr, with Dunfermline goalkeeper Musa Dibaga making one at the other end. The home side also won the corner count 12–6, but the Ayr defence stood firm during a goalless second half.

Both managers used their benches in the closing stages as the match became increasingly stretched, with Dunfermline introducing Olamilekan Adams, Keith Bray and Josh Cooper. Ayr responded with Jamie Murphy, Kenzie Mitchell, Nicholas McAllister, Mark McKenzie, Scott McMann, Ross Taylor, Jamie Hislop and Ben Summers all featuring during the second period.

Referee David Dickinson issued one yellow card during an otherwise disciplined contest, and neither side threatened to find a decisive second goal.

The draw leaves Ayr unbeaten after the opening two Championship fixtures, with four points from six. Dunfermline, meanwhile, remain without a victory and move on to two points from their first two league games.
