In January 2009, Brian Reid brought Roberts from Firhill on the back of the money made from the two money-spinning Kilmarnock games, his signing initially was controversial, due to his previous Kilmarnock days. Roberts made his debut in a top of the table clash with Raith Rovers. His first two goals came in a home match against Brechin City. Roberts put all doubts to rest in the Play-Off Final First Leg against Airdrie United, when after going two goals down, his brace was enough to even the tie ahead of the second leg, of which Ayr won.
Roberts finished the following season as top scorer with nine goals in a disastrous return to the First Division for the Honest Men which saw Ayr relegated.
The next season was be far Roberts most successful at Somerset, banging in 24 goals in all competitions including a famous winner over Hibernian in the Scottish Cup. He also became the first and only Ayr United to score a hat-trick of penalties, in a league game away to East Fife, before getting sent off during the celebrations.
In 2011-12, Roberts was an integral part of the Ayr team that knocked out 3 SPL teams out of the League Cup, Roberts scored the winning penalty against Hearts, who went on to win the Scottish Cup, in a 5-1 win in the final over city rivals, Hibernian.
After Brian Reid left, Roberts became a player-manager, limiting his playing opportunities to focus on managing. He went the entire season without scoring. Roberts got his first goal in over a year in a League 1 game against Stenhousemuir to become the second oldest player to score for Ayr United.
