Aaron Muirhead's winner for Ayr United ensured former club Partick Thistle could still face a Scottish Championship relegation play-off.
Thistle were on course for the win they needed to ensure safety when Shea Gordon headed in a Joe Cardle cross.
But Liam Smith met Andy Murdoch's low delivery to level and Muirhead volleyed Declan McDaid's corner into the net.
Defeat at Queen of the South next week, coupled with an Alloa Athletic win at Ayr, would leave Thistle second bottom.
Gordon's opener was his second in five days against Ayr, after his strike won the meeting at Somerset Park on Tuesday.
But Muirhead's sublime winner brought revenge and keeps the Premiership play-off bound Somerset Park side on track for a third-place finish in an impressive season.
Partick Thistle manager Gary Caldwell: "I've not got the words to explain how frustrating and disappointing it is. We stopped playing, stopped running and stopped doing the simple things.
"Every player on the park wasn't good enough. Next week is going to be a very difficult game to play in and they have to be ready to stand up. It's in our hands and we know what we need to do."
Ayr United manager Ian McCall: "We've played Partick Thistle five times this season and beaten them four times and we've got a third of their budget.
"Luke McCowan's debut was as good a debut as I've seen. He was outstanding. I'm going to rest players next week - I need to."
