Match Report

A controversial Oisin Smyth penalty on the stroke of half-time condemned Ayr United to a narrow defeat against Partick Thistle at Somerset Park. United improved after the interval but could not find an equaliser, leaving the disputed spot-kick as the decisive moment of the evening.

Thistle enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with Smyth firing over from outside the penalty area and former Ayr midfielder Ben Dempsey helping the visitors establish control. The Thistle Seb Drozd had a shot deflected behind before Lee Ashcroft headed narrowly wide from a corner, although Harry Stone remained largely untroubled. The Thistle

Smyth was booked for simulation in the 35th minute, while Ayr began to threaten through successive corners, with efforts from Scott McMann and Luke McBeth blocked. Sky Sports The breakthrough came just before the interval when referee Matthew MacDermid penalised Liam Dick following a challenge on Drozd, allowing Smyth to convert low to Stone’s left despite the goalkeeper getting a touch. The Thistle

Gary Naysmith introduced Thomas Hatton for Dick at half-time and adopted a more attacking approach, prompting a much stronger spell from United. The Thistle Lewis Budinauckas was called into action as Ayr pressed, while Ashcroft made a crucial goal-line clearance after Owen Stirton forced the ball beyond the visiting goalkeeper. The Thistle

Josh Landers and Marco Rus were introduced in the 65th minute, with Jamie Murphy and Kieran Shanks also joining the search for an equaliser. Sky Sports Thistle remained dangerous on the counter-attack, Ben Stanway shooting narrowly wide and Drozd having a finish ruled out for offside. The Thistle

Stone saved a late effort from substitute Aidan Fitzpatrick before Landers fired over following a set-piece in the 89th minute, but Ayr’s efforts brought no reward. Sky Sports Afterwards, Naysmith described the penalty award as “another really poor decision”, while Thistle manager Mark Wilson acknowledged: “We got a wee bit of luck to get the penalty, I think that’s putting it lightly.”
