Match Report

Ayr United edged a tight encounter 1–0 at the Albert Bartlett Stadium as a first?half goal from Mark McKenzie secured all three points against Airdrieonians. The visitors’ defensive discipline and composure in the closing stages ensured the Diamonds were held to a narrow defeat in a match where chances were at a premium.

Ayr made the crucial breakthrough in the 19th minute when Ethan Walker’s run and cutback set up Mark McKenzie for a simple finish, giving the Honest Men the lead. The goal came amid a cagey opening spell in which both sides struggled to create clear opportunities, with Airdrie responding but failing to work Ayr’s goalkeeper in the same way.

After the break, Airdrie pushed for an equaliser, and the visitors were forced to defend deep and absorb wave after wave of pressure. Efforts from Euan Henderson and others came close, but the home side could not find a way past the Ayr backline, which held firm through a series of late set?pieces and substitutions.

The result was a frustration for Airdrie, who had hoped to climb off the bottom of the table and use the game as a platform after a recent positive result. For Ayr United, it marked another valuable away win in a season where tight Championship fixtures have repeatedly swung on small margins
