Match Report

Morton and Ayr United fought out a drab Scottish Championship draw at Cappielow, which keeps the visitors in third place and the hosts in eighth.

The first half came to life late on when Iain Wilson prodded the Greenock side in front from close range as he met a Kirk Broadfoot knock-down from a long free-kick.

The decision to award the set-piece had enraged visiting manager Scott Brown, who was booked for voicing his displeasure in the aftermath of the goal.

Brown had earlier been exasperated after a crude challenge from Morgan Boyes on Nick McAllister only resulted in a yellow card.

The early second-half equaliser also came from a free-kick, with George Oakley touching home a whipped delivery from Jay Henderson, much to the annoyance of the home fans who had been enjoying heckling their former striker.

The best Morton could muster after the interval was a Filip Stuparevic header straight at the goalkeeper.

Ayr finished with a minor flurry as Alfie Bavidge had a shot blocked and saved either side of George Stanger knocking the ball just wide with his knee.

Morton goalscorer Iain Wilson: "It was a bit of a scrappy game but we can take positives from getting a point at least. We could do with getting a win soon.

"Scoring has been our major problem but we’ve been creating chances. If we keep doing that, the goals will come."

Ayr United goalscorer George Oakley: "I knew I was going to get a bit of stick, first time back here, but you just have to deal with it.

"We know we have more to give, but this is a hard place to come. It was always going to be a battle.

"We were much better in the second half and probably looked like the team most likely to win the game., but we'll take a point and get back up the road."
