AYR claimed yet another scalp on their travels with a comfortable win at Glebe Park.
Goals in each half from Paul Weaver and Jerome Vareille gave United their fourth league victory away from Somerset Park this season and lifted Robert Connor's men into the top four.
Ayr dominated the game almost from start to finish and could have won by far more were it not for some wasteful finishing in front of goal.
But there was no problem with Weaver's scoring eye when he struck from the edge of the box to brighten a dull first half.
The little midfielder collected a loose ball on the 18 yard line and smacked the ball below Craig Nelson to put Ayr in charge.
And they should have been two up by the break when Weaver and Vareille combined in a lightning break from the back to set up David Dunn, but his shot was scooped over the top when he could have done better.
But Ayr started the second half on fire and Ryan Caddis had a shot deflected just wide as Brechin attempted to plug the gaps in their defence.
A brief rally from the home side threatened to derail Ayr's charge and Mark McGeown was required to dash from his line to deny Chris Geddes as the striker charged in on goal.
But Ayr were soon back on top and Caddis, who was destroying opposite number Scott Walker, ran riot down the right beating four men before wandering into trouble when he should have shot. The loose ball fell to Chris Strain who curled his effort just over from 20 yards.
Then on the hour, Strain put Vareille clean through on goal but the Frenchman's shot was saved by Nelson, only for the rebound to fall to Caddis.
However, after doing the hard part by rounding the fallen keeper, Caddis lashed over a near empty net from 12 yards.
But Ayr weren't made to rue their missed chances as they wrapped up the game on 70 minutes when Vareille collected a headed pass from Dunn and held off his marker to turn and fire home from close range.
Ayr then produced some exhibition football in the closing stages, much to the delight of the travelling support, and Weaver almost provided a spectacular finish to a flowing move but couldn't get enough on an overhead kick from Gary Miller's cross.
Brechin finally woke from their slumber in the closing stages but the game was already gone and they couldn't find a way past the inspired McGeown, who denied Geddes and Steve Hampshire as they searched for a consolation strike.
