Forfar Athletic produced a determined second-half display to beat Ayr United 2–1 at Station Park and end the visitors’ brief resurgence after their midweek win at Stranraer.
The match began brightly for Ayr, who took the lead in the 48th minute through David Sinclair. The striker latched onto a loose ball inside the box and fired home to give Mark Roberts’ side a slender advantage.
Forfar, however, responded with greater intensity after the interval. They drew level in the 52nd minute when Paul Swankie found the net with a well-placed finish, capitalising on a defensive error. The momentum had shifted, and the home side pressed hard for a winner.
That goal came in the 69th minute when Darryl Robertson’s cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by an Ayr defender, completing the turnaround. Forfar then held firm, repelling late pressure from the visitors to secure a vital three points in their battle against relegation.
The result left Ayr still seventh in the Scottish Second Division, their away form once again a concern after a promising start to 2013. Forfar, meanwhile, moved closer to safety with a hard-fought victory in front of a sparse crowd.
