Substitute Andrew Nelson scored with nine minutes left to give Dundee their first Scottish Championship win of the campaign against Ayr United.
The Englishman, who had only been on for six minutes, headed Jordan Marshall's cross past Ross Doohan.
However, Ayr will consider themselves unlucky to lose.
First, Jack Hamilton made a fine block to deny Alan Forrest, then referee Alan Newlands waved played on after Cammy Kerr appeared to handle in the box.
Dundee manager James McPake: "I think we deserved to win. I thought in terms of football we were the better team.
"I'm delighted with the three points, delighted with the big crowd, delighted we could produce for them, delighted is the word here."
Ayr United manager Ian McCall: "All the football was played by us up until we went daft with 10 or 15 minutes to go, but I'm just angry because it's as clear a penalty as you'll ever see.
"Maybe it's because it's wee Ayr Utd coming to Dens with a big crowd. The linesman's got a great view and he clearly doesn't see Kerr touch the ball. It's a stonewall penalty. It changed the course of the game."
