Match Report

Arbroath moved five points clear of the Scottish Championship relegation zone with victory over promotion hopefuls Ayr United.

Dale Hilson put the hosts in front from close range after Scott Stewart had flicked on a Mikey McKenna corner.

Ben Dempsey's low shot struck the outside of the left-hand post as Ayr pushed for parity after the break.
And Arbroath doubled their lead on the hour when Ryan Dow crossed for David Gold to head home.

Ayr remain a point behind second-placed Dundee, who host bottom side Hamilton on Saturday while leaders Queen's Park visit Raith Rovers. Second-bottom Cove Rangers, a point above Hamilton, are at home to Partick Thistle and Inverness take on Morton in Greenock.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "I'm delighted with the result because we need the points. It's another shut out. My players aren't fancy. You've got to be happy with the attitude of the players that want to work for you and our players were magnificent at that against a very, very good Ayr United team."
