Match Report

fter three games without a win, United bounced back at Station Park with a 1-0 victory over Forfar Athletic.

United dominated proceedings but could only manage one goal through Kevin Kyle, thanks to outstanding goalkeeping from Rab Douglas.

Ayr made two changes from the side that lost 4-2 to Dunfermline with Kyle McAusland coming in for the suspended Adam Hunter and Marenghi replacing Forrest.

Ayr’s precious goal came from a cross from McAusland which was parried by Douglas allowing Kevin Kyle to nod home.

Ross Campbell had an opportunity to level for the home side with just five minutes to go, but he fired over the bar from the middle of the box.

After the match, a delighted Mark Roberts said: “We were very good, especially in the first half.

“We played well throughout at what is a hard place to come.

“Rab Douglas made two great saves in the match and Michael Moffat also could have had a penalty so although it was only 1-0, it could have been more.

“Moffat was a stand out performer for us, especially after going through such a tough week. We spoke about it in the dressing room before the game as not many players get the amount of press and attention he has had to deal with recently.

“He was magnificent throughout the match and linked up well with Malcolm and Kyle.

“Craig Malcolm is allowed to go forward and that is because of Brian Gilmour. He was happy to sit in midfield and pass the ball. For me, he was the best player of the park.

“I am delighted to be in the play-offs for Christmas and said to the guys that nobody below us has beaten us this season, so it’s important to keep it that way, and set our sights on Stranraer.

“If we could beat East Fife, it would put us on Stranraer’s coat tails and set us up nicely for our trip down there on the 4th January.

“At home recently we’ve conceded a lot of goals and we need the fans more than anyone at the minute.

“We need that backing. If we get that, we’ll do very well this season.”
