George Caldwell was a Catrine man who played for Glenafton Athletic, Airdrie, St.Mirren and Alloa Athletic. He then coached at Albion Rovers before becoming a coach at Ayr in August 1976.
George Caldwell had been appointed to the position of coach at Ayr United by Alex Stuart and when Ally MacLeod arrived in September 1978 he did not see any need to change that situation. George had a superb start - 5-0 against Montrose.
A defeat at Clydebank was followed by a win at Queen of the South.
The grip of winter then took its toll and by the time it had released that George’s interim period had come to an end.
Second Spell
eorge Caldwell once more found himself as a caretaker manager at Ayr when he succeeded Willie McLean as manager in April 1983 with relegation threatening. Five games were left the first two being lost. The club was in second bottom position. Alan McInally scored at hat trick in a 4-0 win over queens Park, Robert Connor a hat trick in a 3-2 win over raith Rovers setting up a final match battle to avoid relegation at Clyde’s expense.
It happened - with results going Ayr’s way and relegation was avoided. Caldwell accepted the post on a permamanent basis in May 1983.
Despite this, he resigned in October 1985 following a 1-0 win over East Fife.
