OLIVER NORWOOD bagged the only goal as Manchester United's young stars narrowly saw off the Honest Men.

The Old Trafford starlet thumped home a rocket from 25 yards to break the deadlock in a close-fought clash. It was an excellent run out for Ayr, who also took the occasion to blood some of their own youngsters.

For Man United, first-team stars Thomas Kuszczak and Darron Gibson both started while Paul Pogba and Danny Drinkwater topped a cast of highly-rated Red Devils prospects.

And it was Drinkwater who went closest early on when his rifled effort hit the post in 12 minutes before forcing another great stop from the alert Kevin Cuthbert.

But while the Ayr keeper was in fine form, he was helpless at Norwood's cracking effort in 54 minutes.
