He joined Ayr United in 1992 after leaving Hull City, spending two seasons at Somerset Park, making 73 appearances and scoring 3 goals. A hugely inspirational defender, Shotton had previously spent seven seasons at Oxford United, winning the 1986 Milk Cup, and later played for Portsmouth, Huddersfield Town, Barnsley and Hull City. After retiring, he was an assistant manager at Barnsley and later managed Oxford United
