He starred for Aberdeen, Spurs and Barcelona — but Steve Archibald could have been an Honest Man.
But the move was scuppered when Jim McSherry, refused to move to Clyde in exchange.
It happened in 1977 when Clyde boss Craig Brown phoned every Premier League club trying to sell Archibald to raise much needed cash.
But only Ayr manager Alex Stuart took up the bait and offered £15,000 and McSherry in exchange for Archibald moving to the seaside.
Brown recalls: “In desperation for the money and the high regard I had for McSherry, I was disposed to accept.
“Sadly for me, McSherro, as I now can affectionately call him, refused to come, using the fact that Shawfield, our home ground, was Scotland’s leading greyhound stadium.
“His acerbic put down was: ‘I’m no’ wantin’ to play at a dog track’.”
Archibald did pull on an Ayr shirt in 1991-92 when he made one appearance before heading to Reading, Fulham and East Fife.
