Queen of the South produced a devastating second-half display to crush Ayr United 5–1 at Somerset Park and underline their status as Scottish Second Division leaders.

The home side actually took the lead after half an hour when David Winters rose highest to meet Kyle McAusland’s cross and head past the Doonhamers’ goalkeeper. For a brief spell it looked as though Ayr might pull off a surprise result against the division’s pacesetters.

Any such hopes were extinguished in the space of 12 first-half minutes. Ryan McStay’s attempted clearance deflected into his own net in the 32nd minute to level the score, and Derek Clark put the visitors ahead before the interval with a well-taken finish in the 43rd.

The second half turned into an Ayr nightmare. Gavin Carmichael made it 3–1 within two minutes of the restart, racing onto a through ball and slotting home. The game was effectively over by the hour mark when Austin McCann, under pressure, inadvertently diverted another cross into his own net to give Queen of the South a 4–1 advantage.

Stephen Lyle added a fifth in the 72nd minute, finishing off a sweeping move to complete a memorable afternoon for the Dumfries side. The scoreline left Ayr eighth in the table, 29 points behind their visitors, and highlighted the gulf in class on the day.
