Championship – The season ends early!

The 2019/20 season was the 123rd season of in Scotland.  Scottish Professional Football League season started on 2 August 2019, and is due to end on 17 May 2020 and was the 105th competitive season in the clubs history and the second season after their return to the Championship.

The season again started well with a 4-2 win at home to Morton and, after a sensational 2-0 win over league leaders Dundee United by Ayr found themselves joint top of the Championship.  Ayr United followed that up with a convincing 4-1 win at Alloa on 22nd September which brought great praise from the manager.

“I said to them at half time that in 20 years of management that’s as good as any as one of my teams has ever played. And I include my good Falkirk teams and my very good Dundee United in my first season with internationals in the team.

“The level of football we played and the type of football we played was fantastic.”

This was said on Saturday 21st September. On Sunday 22nd September Ian McCall resigned to become manager of Partick Thistle. Sandy Stewart was given the role of Manager on an interim basis during the recruitment process to appoint a new manager.

Mark Kerr was appointed manager on 22nd Oct 2019 and successfully managed Ayr to the fourth in the league when the fixtures suddenly stopped due to the COVID virus.  The league was finally agreed to be completed by the SPFL and voting clubs with no play off games, meaning Ayr would remain in the championship for another season.
