Division 2 – Ally Brings Promotion

Season 1987/88 will long be remembered for a Championship winning season, superb flowing football from Ayr United and the tn_Stenhousemuir (h) 22 Jan 88effervescence of manager Ally McLeod who had been building the side for two seasons.

The forward line of Sludden, Templeton and Walker scoring over 90 goals in all competitions between them had engendered optimism in the Somerset Park faithful even from the first kick of the ball and there seemed to be only one team in the championship race, despite a close challenge from St Johnstone.

United’s sharp shooting forwards netted a host of goals which delighted the Somerset Park faithful.

Towards the end of that season, millionaire businessman David Murray made a bid to buy the club but his offer was deemed to be unsuitable by the clubs’ shareholders and the bid was rejected. There was even a suggestion that Ally McLeod would resign if Murray took over.
