Division 2 – Championship Winning Season for Ayr

This was to be a momentous season for Ayr United. They stormed back to the top flight of Scottish football taking the Second Division Championship in some style. The success was achieved largely to the amazing goalscoring exploits of Jimmy Smith. United had recorded a 5-3 win against Albion Rovers and a 7-0 win against Forfar Athletic as early as September and followed this up with five wins from five in October. Apart from an early defeat to Kings Park in August, Ayr United did not suffer another loss until February when East Fife beat them 2-1.

Promotion was concluded early in the season, on St Patricks day of 17th March with a 2-2 draw at home to Stenhousemuir. The Honest Men scored 7 goals again in April, this time in beating Dundee United by 7-1.

Smith netted an incredible 66 goals for Ayr in just 38 league matches. To this day it remains a British goalscoring record and one that is unlikely ever to be beaten.

Archie Buchanan also took his side to play their first match against an English club travelling to Workington for a mid season break and embarked on a successful Scandinavian tour, beating the Swedish International side on the way.

The date for that historic win was 28th May 1928.
