George Caldwell once more found himself as a caretaker manager at Ayr when he succeeded Willie McLean as manager in April 1983 with relegation threatening. Five games were left the first two being lost. The club was in second bottom position. Alan McInally scored at hat trick in a 4-0 win over queens Park, Robert Connor a hat trick in a 3-2 win over raith Rovers setting up a final match battle to avoid relegation at Clyde’s expense.
It happened – with results going Ayr’s way and relegation was avoided. Caldwell accepted the post on a permamanent basis in May 1983.
Despite this, he resigned in October 1985 following a 1-0 win over East Fife.
