George Caldwell was a Catrine man who played for Glenafton Athletic, Airdrie, St.Mirren and Alloa Athletic. He then coached at Albion Rovers before becoming a coach at Ayr in August 1976.
George Caldwell had been appointed to the position of coach at Ayr United by Alex Stuart and when Ally MacLeod arrived in September 1978 he did not see any need to change that situation. George had a superb start – 5-0 against Montrose.
A defeat at Clydebank was followed by a win at Queen of the South.
The grip of winter then took its toll and by the time it had released that George’s interim period had come to an end.
