Match Report

Ayr United's disappointing start to the Championship season continued as Inverness Caledonian Thistle left Somerset Park with all three points after a clinical 3–1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Two goals inside the opening seventeen minutes from Luis Longstaff and Ryan Duncan put the visitors firmly in the driving seat, and although Owen Stirton pulled one back for the Honest Men before the half-hour mark, Adam Mackinnon's second-half strike sealed a deserved win for Scott Kellacher's side.

The defeat — Ayr's third in six league outings — left Gary Naysmith's men languishing in the lower reaches of the table, with just one win to their name since the opening day victory over Arbroath.

First Half
The match could hardly have started worse for the home side. Inside four minutes, Paul Allan found Luis Longstaff in space on the edge of the box, and the Inverness striker unleashed a left-footed curler that flew into the top-right corner of Harry Stone's net, leaving the Ayr goalkeeper with no chance.

Stunned by the early setback, Ayr struggled to find any rhythm, and the situation worsened on seventeen minutes. A corner conceded by Leon King led to a scramble in the box, and when the ball was worked back into the danger area, Ryan Duncan rose highest to power a header into the bottom-right corner, doubling the Caley Jags' advantage.

There was a brief injury concern for Inverness on ten minutes when captain Danny Devine required treatment, but the defender was able to continue after a short delay.

Ayr gradually began to work their way into the contest and came close to halving the deficit on thirteen minutes, when Leon King met a corner with a header that drifted wide of the left post. Thomas Hatton then went even closer on thirty-five minutes, firing a left-footed effort from the centre of the box that narrowly missed the top-left corner.

The Honest Men finally found a way back on twenty-seven minutes. Graeme Shinnie conceded a corner, and from Ross Taylor's delivery, the ball fell to Owen Stirton in the centre of the box, who made no mistake, firing a right-footed shot into the centre of the goal to bring Ayr back into the match.

The momentum appeared to be shifting. Ben Summers won a free-kick in the attacking half moments later, and Ayr began to press with growing confidence, but they could not find an equaliser before the interval.

Half-Time: Ayr United 1–2 Inverness CT

Second Half
Naysmith's men emerged from the break with renewed purpose and nearly levelled within minutes of the restart. Owen Stirton rose to meet a corner on fifty-four minutes, but his header flashed just over the crossbar. Leon King then saw another header drift wide of the target from a sixty-third-minute corner.

The game became increasingly niggly, with a series of fouls disrupting the flow. Alfie Stewart was the first to enter the referee's book, cautioned on fifty-three minutes, and Remi Savage followed him on seventy-three minutes for a bad foul on Ross Taylor.

The decisive moment of the half arrived on seventy-one minutes. Inverness won a corner conceded by Luke McBeth, and when the ball was worked to Graeme Shinnie in the box, the veteran midfielder's shot was saved by Stone. However, the ball fell kindly to Adam Mackinnon, who swept a left-footed effort into the bottom-left corner to restore the visitors' two-goal cushion and effectively kill the contest.

Naysmith turned to his bench on sixty-five minutes, introducing Josh Landers and Jamie Murphy in place of Thomas Hatton and Olly Whyte, but the changes could not spark a revival. Murphy saw a shot blocked on seventy-five minutes and blazed another over the bar on eighty-two minutes.

Mackinnon was substituted himself on eighty-three minutes, replaced by Noa Boutin, after picking up a booking on seventy-nine minutes. Owen Stirton was withdrawn on eighty-six minutes in favour of Kenzie Mitchell, and Scott McMann was booked on eighty-eight minutes for a foul on Longstaff.

Deep into stoppage time, Leon King had one last chance to set up a grandstand finish, but his right-footed shot from the centre of the box was saved by Ross Munro, and the match ended with Inverness comfortably seeing out the remaining moments.
