Ayr United played in their only match against Darlington to date in a local competition in the North East of England.

tn_Blyth (a) Darlington (n) 16-18 Jul 01 FRAyr United played in their only match against Darlington to date in a local competition in the North East of England. The match played on 18th July was their second and last game in “The Absolute Print & Design Trophy” at windy Croft Park in Blyth.

Playing with the wind 182 people saw Ayr totally dominate the first half with good passing and possession. The first goal was a cracker from the left foot of Paul Sheerin from 20 yds in 19 minutes.

Ayr’s second goal came on 42 minutes with a good run and shot from Gary Teale after McGinlay won a fierce challenge in midfield.

Ayr scored again in 66 minutes after a good run down the left from Gary Teale laying the ball to McGinlay whose shot was well parried by the keeper but Bradford was there to slot it home.

Darlington scored two late goals through Marsh and Ford the latter being a very soft penalty. Ayr squandered at least two good chances before the end but well deserved their 3-2 win.

The Ayr team was Nelson (Dodds), Robertson, Hughes, Duffy, (McEwan), Craig, Lovering (Sharpe), Teale, Sheerin (Wilson), McGinlay, Bradford, Annand (Scally).

A combined programme for the competition was produced.
