Full Results Against Bolton Wanderers

Ayr United welcomed the then English Second Division side Bolton Wanderers to Somerset Park on 2nd August 1969, the first time the Lancashire team had played at Ayr.

The friendly match saw United unvail what was to become a successful staring eleven of Stewart, Malone, Murphy, Fleming, Quinn and Micthell, Young, Ferguson, Ingram, Mc Culloch and Rough.

Bolton legend Nat Lofthouse managed the club at the time. Ally McLeod was at the helm at Ayr at the beginning of his march to legend status at Somerset Park.

The 4,000 crowd saw Bolton’s Byron score in 57 minutes with Phillips making it 2-0 on 70 minutes. Alex Ingram was impeded in the box and Dick Malone scored the resultant penalty for Ayr late in the game for a 2-1 defeat.

The match was significant for Ayr in the debut of Quinton ‘Cutty’ Young who had a scintillating match

No programme was produced for this first match.

A combined programme, however, was produced for the subsequent match against the Lancashire side, again at Somerset Park, on 18th July 2012 when Ayr held the English Championship side to a 1-1 draw.
